Cheers to Choice: Pint-sized Wine Bottles Coming to UK Shelves
Brits are in for a spirited treat as the Department for Business and Trade announces the return of pint size bottles for still and sparkling wine in the UK.
The move will add the 568ml option to the existing 200ml and 500ml options, providing consumers with more purchasing options as part of the broader initiative to support the UK's wine sector. These changes are set to benefit 900 vineyards, boosting wine production and supporting British businesses.
The new 568ml 'pint' quantity aims to address the industry's challenges with inconsistent sizes and aligns with consumer preferences. The legislation will also see still wine being sold in 200ml quantities and sparkling wine being sold in 500ml bottles, halfway between the current full and half sizes of 750ml and 375ml.
Until the legislation comes into effect, still wine will not be allowed to be sold in 200ml quantities and sparkling wine won’t be allowed in 500ml.
This isn't the first time the UK has seen pint-sized bottles on shelves. Pint-sized bottles of champagne were reportedly a favourite of wartime leader Sir Winston Churchill and were available in shops until 1973 when the UK joined the European Common Market.
As the UK embraces these new measures, the wine industry anticipates increased opportunities for innovation, a broader range of choices, and streamlined production processes. Cheers to a pint-sized revolution in the world of wine!
