Alcohol-free beer and pet grooming used to measure inflation

In addition to changes to the way inflation is calculated, there has been a shift toward healthier living.
Alcohol-free beer and houmous are among the items added to the Office for National Statistics' (ONS) virtual basket of products and services to display the rising cost of living.
To get to the monthly inflation estimates, the ONS collects the costs of 760 items and services from various retailers. Every year, the items are reviewed and chosen on the basis of being representative of things that consumers typically spend their money on.
In the most recent analysis, motorcycles, dashboard cameras, and pet grooming have all been included.
This year, healthier lifestyle choices influence cONSumer spending, shown by items such as houmous and non-alcoholic beer,
Stephen Burgess, deputy director of ONS pricing, said.
The items that have been added or deleted over time provide a fascinating insight into our evolving tastes, fashions, and lifestyles.
In 1947, the wild rabbit was one of the first items to be included on the first list. By 1980, tea bags had only been available in supermarkets.
To end with a total of 760 items, 27 items have been added and 19 have been deleted since the start.
Due to their increasing success and customer demand, the ONS said 0% beer and hummus had been introduced. Caravans were already in the basket, but motorhomes, which were often expensive, are now included in the mix.
Dashcams represented the increasing number of security products available to drivers, as well as allowing the basket to keep up with the latest innovations.
According to the ONS, pet owners were now more likely to use grooming and care for their animals outside of the ones provided by a vet.
Houmous has been a staple of lunch boxes for years, but as a plant-based protein and fiber source, it's becoming more popular,
investment platform AJ Bell's head of financial analysis, Danni Hewson, said.
With the increasing use of weight loss medications, she said the trend was accelerating. In addition, a desire to lead healthier lifestyles has brought no- and low-alcohol alternatives to beer and other drinks into the basket.
During the Covid-19 pandemic, specifically for Doodles,
or curly coats, a surge in household pet grooming was cited, prompting increased demand for pet groomers.
ONS to use scanning tech
Rolls of wrapping paper, which are more common in supermarkets, have been used in the basket to replace sheets of wrapping papers. Many of the changes to the basket were made as a result of the ONS' introduction of a new method of data collection. More than half of the grocery stores will be able to use supermarket scanner data. Thousands of manually collected prices will now be replaced by millions of dollars collected automatically from supermarket to supermarket.
Once all the data is collected and processed, it provides everyone with the UK's inflation rate, a widely used measure of rising costs of living. Inflation affects benefits, pensions, and interest rate decisions made by the Bank of England. The government has set a 2% inflation target for the Consumer Prices Index (CPI) measure. In January, the most recent reported rate was 3%. Official forecasters expected that the decline would be to 2% by the year's end by then, but this is now much less likely, owing to the economic fallout from the war in Iran. A rate of closer to 3% is now predicted.
