‘Actions Speak Louder’: Alan Ritchson Goes Silent in Bruising First Trailer for Motor City
DETROIT — The "Motor City" is about to roar with the sound of revving engines and shattering bone, but very little conversation. IFC Films and RLJE have officially dropped the first teaser trailer for Motor City, a 1970s-set revenge thriller starring Reacher breakout Alan Ritchson, revealing a project that is as visually striking as it is aurally unique (trailer below).
The film, directed by Potsy Ponciroli (Old Henry), has been the subject of industry whispers for months due to its radical narrative choice: it is virtually a silent film. Reports suggest the entire 103-minute runtime contains fewer than five lines of spoken dialogue, relying instead on Ritchson’s physical intensity and a "thunderous" rock score, reportedly featuring contributions from Detroit’s own Jack White.
A ‘Love Letter’ to 70s Grit
Set against the backdrop of a decaying, neon-soaked 1976 Detroit, the trailer introduces Ritchson as John Miller, a working-class romantic who finds himself on the wrong side of the law. After being framed by a ruthless gangster for a crime he didn't commit, Miller emerges from a brutal prison stint with a singular, unspoken objective: vengeance.
The trailer showcases a grimy, "wheat-pasted" aesthetic that pays homage to the exploitation cinema of the 1970s. From high-speed muscle car chases through trash-strewn alleys to visceral, hand-to-hand combat in dimly lit bars, Ponciroli appears to have crafted a "visceral, propulsive spectacle" designed for the largest screens possible.
“We shot Motor City to be immersive”, Ponciroli said in a statement accompanying the trailer. “Every frame, every sound, is designed for a theatre. It’s a love letter to Detroit and to the kind of filmmaking you can actually feel.”
The Powerhouse Cast
While Ritchson provides the film's "inhumanly broad" shoulders, he is supported by a high-calibre ensemble. Shailene Woodley co-stars as Sophia, the woman at the heart of Miller’s quest, while Ben Foster portrays the villainous Reynolds, the man responsible for Miller’s incarceration.

Out of Development Hell
The trailer’s arrival marks the end of a nearly 15-year journey for the script, written by Chad St. John. At various points in the early 2010s, Hollywood heavyweights including Chris Evans, Jake Gyllenhaal, and Gerard Butler were attached to the lead role before the project collapsed.
It wasn't until Ritchson’s recent surge in global popularity that the project found its perfect match. Critics who caught an early screening at last year’s Venice International Film Festival have already praised the actor’s ability to "let his fists do the talking," drawing comparisons to recent "minimalist" action hits like Sisu and John Woo’s Silent Night.
The Verdict
By stripping away the dialogue, Motor City forces the audience to focus on the raw emotion of its performances and the precision of its choreography. With a prime summer release date of 24th July 2026, IFC is banking on Ritchson’s star power and the film’s "rock-disco" energy to provide a counter-programming hit against the season’s more traditional blockbusters.
If the trailer is any indication, John Miller may not have much to say, but the impact of his return to Detroit will be heard loud and clear.
