US-Russian Ballerina Detained in Russia for Alleged Ukraine Fundraising
A 33-year-old Russian-American ballerina, Kseniya Karelina, has been detained in Russia on charges of treason and fundraising for Ukraine's military. Russian authorities claim she has raised money for Ukraine, which has been supporting its armed forces with medical supplies, equipment, weapons, and ammunition since February 2022.
Karelina, who became a US citizen in 2021, is now under pre-trial custody, facing up to 20 years in prison if convicted.
The White House is actively seeking more information about Karelina's arrest and working to secure consular access. In a briefing on Tuesday, State Department spokesman Matthew Miller highlighted the challenge in obtaining consular assistance due to Russia not recognizing dual citizenship as they consider them to be “Russian citizens first and foremost". National Security Council spokesman John Kirby urges US citizens, including dual nationals, to leave Russia immediately, citing the dangers they face in the current political climate.
Razom for Ukraine, an American charity that allegedly received a donation from Karelina, expresses dismay at her arrest, emphasising its focus on humanitarian aid, disaster relief, education, and advocacy. The charity has stated that it does not disclose donor information.
This incident unfolds amidst broader tensions between Russia and the US, with multiple US nationals, including journalists and former marines, facing imprisonment on various charges in Russian territory. As Karelina's case develops, questions about her treatment and the broader implications of US citizens' safety in Russia remain in focus, prompting heightened concern from both the public and government officials.
