Trump and Putin to Discuss Ukraine Ceasefire
U.S. President Donald Trump said he will speak with Russian President Vladimir Putin on Tuesday to push for a ceasefire in Ukraine after recent negotiations brought the two sides closer. “We want to see if we can bring that war to an end,” Trump said aboard Air Force One, adding that “a lot of work’s been done over the weekend.” Ukraine has already agreed to a 30-day ceasefire proposal backed by the U.S., but Russia has yet to commit.
Trump envoy Steve Witkoff, who recently met with Putin in Moscow, described the talks as “positive,” noting that discussions have focused on key territorial and infrastructure issues, including power plants and access to ports. “We’re already talking about that, dividing up certain assets,” Trump said when asked about potential concessions. Meanwhile, U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio and Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov have been working on the “next steps” in ceasefire negotiations.
The talks come amid warnings from the U.S. and its G7 allies that further sanctions could be imposed on Russia. While some European leaders have expressed skepticism about Moscow’s willingness to negotiate, Trump’s administration remains hopeful. Witkoff said progress has been made, but acknowledged the complexity of securing a deal. “There are so many elements to the implementation of a ceasefire,” he said, adding that final negotiations could take weeks.
