Thousands Gather in Rome to Say Goodbye to Pope Francis

Tens of thousands have flocked to St. Peter’s Basilica since Wednesday to honor Pope Francis, who passed away Monday at 88 after a stroke. His body, lying in an open coffin under the grandeur of the basilica, has drawn nearly 50,000 mourners in just 24 hours. Crowds waited up to eight hours to enter the church, prompting officials to extend viewing hours overnight. Many described the atmosphere as solemn but deeply moving.

Pope Francis' 12-year reign was known for its focus on social justice, immigrants, and the poor.  As people from across the world continued to stream in, cardinals and Vatican officials paid quiet respects, marking the start of the formal mourning process. His funeral will take place Saturday at 10 a.m. in front of the basilica, led by Cardinal Giovanni Battista Re.

World leaders including Prince William, President Macron, and President Zelensky will attend, with millions expected to tune in from home. Francis requested a modest ceremony and will be laid to rest at the Basilica of St. Mary Major, away from Vatican tradition. The College of Cardinals will soon begin preparations for the conclave to elect the next pope.
