Russell Wilson Chooses Pittsburgh Steelers for 2024 Season
Nine-time Pro Bowl quarterback Russell Wilson is set to make the steel city his new home as he signs with the Pittsburgh Steelers for the upcoming NFL season.
Wilson wastes no time following Broncos release
Wilson was informed by his current team, the Denver Broncos, on March 4th that he would be released at the start of the league year, which will begin on March 13th. This marks the end of his two season run with the team.
"We spoke with Russell Wilson today to inform of his release after the start of the league year," general manager George Paton and head coach Sean Payton said in a joint statement. "On behalf of the Broncos, we thank Russell for his contributions and dedication to our team and community while wishing him the best as he continues his career. As we move forward, we are focused on building the strongest team possible for the 2024 season and beyond. We are excited to improve this offseason and will have the flexibility to get better through the draft and free agency."
Steelers secure bargain
The quarterback quickly began to talk with other teams after gaining permission from the Broncos, and met with Steelers officials in Pittsburgh for over six hours on Friday. The meeting was undoubtedly a success, with the Steelers signing Wilson for only $1.2 million. The Broncos are set to cover the majority of the $39 million salary for Wilson for the upcoming season. The deal will not only benefit Pittsburgh financially but also positions them to build a more robust team around Wilson.
Wilson has already expressed his thanks towards the Steelers in a post on X, captioned: “Year 13. Grateful.” With a Super Bowl victory under his belt, Wilson is on a quest to win a second. As the 2024 season unfolds, fans will be eagerly anticipating Wilson's return to Denver, where he holds an impressive track record against the Steelers, boasting a 2-0 record with eight touchdown passes and a 147.1 passer rating.
