Rafael Nadal Withdraws from Laver Cup

Rafael Nadal Withdraws from Laver Cup

Rafael Nadal has pulled out of the upcoming Laver Cup in Berlin, citing concerns about his ability to perform at his best.

Nadal’s withdrawal from the Laver Cup comes at a time when he had initially hoped to make a strong return. The Laver Cup, set to run from September 20-22, will see Team Europe, captained by Bjorn Borg in his final year, take on Team World.

“I’m really disappointed to share that I won’t be able to compete at the Laver Cup in Berlin next week,” Nadal said in a statement. “This is a team competition, and to really support Team Europe, I need to do what’s best for them. At this moment, there are other players who can help deliver the win.”

“I have so many great, emotional memories from playing Laver Cup, and I was really looking forward to being with my teammates,” he added. “I wish Team Europe the very best of luck and will be cheering them on from afar.”

Nadal’s absence marks a significant change for the tournament, as he teamed up with Roger Federer last year in what became the Swiss legend's final match. As for Nadal, many fans are now eagerly watching his recovery process, with hopes that he can compete fully in 2024, which he has hinted might be his final season.

Nadal, 38, has been struggling with injuries for the past two years, leading to his absence from multiple major tournaments. Although he has not disclosed a specific injury this time, his fitness remains a concern.

The Spaniard has only played one Grand Slam this year, the French Open, where he exited in the first round. He also skipped Wimbledon and had a challenging Olympics.

With Nadal now out of the Laver Cup, Team Europe will rely on its other players to fill the gap and bring home the win.
