Man Dies at UK Immigration Detention Centre
A 26 year old man has passed away while held in Brook House. Brooke House is a migrant detention center located near Gatwick Airport in the UK. Brook House has faced a lot of criticism in recent years. Most of them were regarding how detainees are treated with very strict and inhumane practices. The UK Home Office has offered its condolences to the person’s family and loved ones. It is unable to comment further due to an ongoing investigation.
This incident adds to a troubling history at Brook House. A public inquiry last year uncovered a range of disturbing practices. This included physical abuse, excessive use of force and unsafe restraint techniques. The inquiry was initially brought up by a BBC documentary. It showed footage of staff which were then employed by G4S. They were mistreating detainees both physically and verbally.
This recent death follows another tragic event almost a year ago. A 37 year old Albanian man died after a suicide attempt while in detention at Brook House. The Gatwick Detainees Welfare Group which provides support to people held at the center expressed sorrow over the latest death. They stated that no one should have to spend their final moments in such distressing conditions.
Concerns around detainee welfare in facilities like Brook House remain strong. Advocates are pushing for better treatment and oversight to prevent further tragedies.
