Gunman Kills Four in Midtown Manhattan Office Building
A quiet Monday evening turned into tragedy in Midtown Manhattan when 27-year-old Shane Tamura walked into 345 Park Avenue armed with an M4 rifle and opened fire, killing four people before taking his own life. Among the victims was NYPD officer Didarul Islam, 36, who was working security and was shot as the gunman entered the lobby. A woman, a security guard, and a Blackstone employee were also killed. A fifth victim is currently hospitalized in critical condition.
Tamura, who had driven cross-country from Las Vegas, stormed the building just after 6 p.m., firing first in the lobby before taking an elevator to the 33rd floor where he killed another victim and then died by suicide. The skyscraper houses major firms like Blackstone, KPMG, Deutsche Bank, and the NFL’s headquarters. Employees hid in offices and behind makeshift barricades as police cleared the building floor by floor.
Officials say Tamura acted alone. His motive remains unknown, though he had a history of mental health issues. Mayor Eric Adams and Commissioner Jessica Tisch praised Officer Islam, an immigrant from Bangladesh and expectant father, calling him a hero who gave his life “protecting New Yorkers.”
