Gatwick Airport’s South Terminal Evacuated Over Security Incident
Gatwick Airport's South Terminal has been evacuated this morning after a suspected prohibited item was found in a passenger's luggage, prompting the deployment of a bomb disposal team. Sussex Police confirmed the discovery at 8:20 a.m., leading to a security cordon being set up as a precaution.
"To ensure the safety of the public, staff and other airport users, a security cordon has been put in place whilst the matter is dealt with," said a police spokesperson.
Roads around the terminal have been closed, and the authorities have urged people to avoid the area. Rail services, including Southern, Thameslink, and Gatwick Express, have been suspended, with passengers advised not to travel to the terminal. Local bus routes have also been affected, further complicating travel plans.
The airport released a statement saying, “Safety and security of our passengers and staff remains our top priority. We are working hard to resolve the issue as quickly as possible.” Flights arriving at the North Terminal have not been affected, but passengers in the South Terminal faced significant disruptions.
Travellers described chaotic scenes, with thousands forced outside. Laurence Kemball-Cook, one of those impacted, said, "We were sitting there waiting for a slightly delayed flight when staff rushed over and told us to evacuate. Now we’re waiting with no clear updates.”
Nick Meacham, another passenger, shared footage on social media, showing crowds stranded in car parks and streets. "Even people through security were being taken outside," he said.
This incident marks a significant disruption at one of the UK’s busiest airports. Police and emergency teams are continuing to work on resolving the matter, though no further details about the item found have been disclosed.
While the North Terminal continues operating normally, those travelling through Gatwick are encouraged to check with their airlines for updates before heading to the airport. By midday, no official timeline for the resolution had been provided.
Authorities are expected to provide more information once investigations conclude.
