Durkee Fire, Oregon's Largest Wildfire

What Happened?

The Durkee Fire started on the 17th of July 2024 near Huntington, Oregon. It started because of lightning strikes. The fire quickly spread because of strong winds and dry weather in the area.

Size and Spread

The fire has spread and has cover around 270,000 acres. It makes this the largest wildfire in the United States right now. This is about 421 square miles.

Impact on Communities

The fire has resulted in power shortages and road being closed.  Interstate 84 which is a major highway had to be closed because the fire crossed it as well. Many towns including Huntington and Rye Valley have been evacuated. The fire has  destroyed many homes, farms and many animals.

Firefighting Efforts

Around 500 firefighters are working to put out the fire. The National Guard has also been activated to help. Recent storms brought in some rain which has helped to some extent but the fire remains just 20% controlled.

Challenges

The firefighters face high temperatures and heavy winds making their task more difficult. The weather forecast expects more hot temperatures and thunderstorms which could result in more lightning and new fires.

Why Are Wildfires Increasing?

Wildfires are growing more and more these days and they are quite intense. This is mainly due to climate change which causes higher temperatures and drier conditions. These conditions make it easier for fires to begin and spread.

The Durkee Fire is a big disaster that affected so many people and communities in Oregon. Firefighters are working hard to limit the situation but the weather isn't helping at all. It's a difficult situation that shows how harmful wildfires can be.
