Man, 76, remanded in custody on child cruelty charges after children fell ill at summer camp

At a summer camp in Leicestershire, a 76-year-old man was charged with laced children's sweets with sedatives. After eight children and one adult at the camp at Stathern Lodge, Stather, were admitted to hospital on Monday, Jon Ruben was arrested as part of a Leicestershire Police probe. All have since been discharged. Mr Ruben, a resident of Wayte Court in Ruddington, Nottinghamshire, has been charged with three counts of wilful ill treatment of a child, relating to three boys, between the 25 July and the 29th of July. During the brief hearing at Leicester Magistrates' Court on Saturday, the defendant gave no hint of pleas to the charges.

Mr Ruben is charged with wilfully assaulted, sick-treated, neglected, abandoned, or exposed three boys to needless pain or injury to their wellbeing. He was released in detention and will appear in Leicester Crown Court on August 29th. On Sunday, police said it first received a notice that children at a summer camp on the site had become sick. The eight children, who were all boys aged between eight and 11, were admitted to hospital as a precaution. The Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC), the police watchdog, said it was investigating the force's investigation into the incident.
