Canada Criticizes UK After UK Invites Trump For State Visit

Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney has taken aim at the UK for inviting Donald Trump on a second state visit, calling it a move that "cut across clear messages" that Canada was sending about protecting its sovereignty. Speaking to Sky News, Carney said Canadians "weren't impressed" by the gesture, especially given Trump's repeated comments about wanting Canada to become the 51st U.S. state, a claim that has fueled tension between the two countries since he took office.

The offer, personally delivered by UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer during a February visit to the White House, was meant to boost post-Brexit ties. But Carney, whose recent election campaign focused on resisting U.S. pressure, said the timing undermined Canadian efforts. As a symbolic counter, King Charles, who is also Canada's head of state, has been invited to open Parliament in Ottawa later this month, something Carney described as a "reaffirming moment" during a period of heightened concern over national sovereignty.

Despite their rocky past, Carney said his recent meeting with Trump was more constructive than expected, calling the president “very on top of the essence of a wide range of issues.” He acknowledged progress in trade and security talks and cautiously welcomed Trump’s role in a temporary Ukraine-Russia ceasefire. Still, Carney remains wary: “Always plan for the worst,” he warned, noting that Canada is preparing for every possible scenario.
