Anna Wintour Steps Down as US Vogue’s Editor-in-Chief After 37 Years

After nearly four decades at the helm, Dame Anna Wintour is stepping down as editor-in-chief of American Vogue. The 75-year-old fashion icon broke the news to staff on Thursday, revealing that a new role—head of editorial content—would be introduced and will take over the day-to-day reins. But Wintour isn’t going far; she’ll continue to serve as global editorial director for Vogue and as chief content officer at Vogue’s publishing house Condé Nast.

Wintour’s departure from her position marks the end of an era that redefined fashion journalism. Since taking the job in 1988, she’s turned Vogue into a global powerhouse—putting celebrities on covers, blending couture with high street fashion, and leading the Met Gala since 1995. “When I became the editor of Vogue, I was eager to prove… there was a new, exciting way to imagine an American fashion magazine,” she told staff.

While speculation around her future has swirled for years, Wintour made her stance clear earlier this year: “His Majesty asked me if this meant I was going to stop working, and I said firmly, no.” With the new editorial role reporting directly to her, Wintour remains deeply involved, just with more room for the next generation to “storm the field with their own ideas.”
