Over 1000 Redundancies As 52 Wilko Stores Set To Close

Over 1000 Wilko staff members are being made redundant as 52 Wilko stores are set to close next week.

The closures are set to occur on the 12th and 14th of September, with distribution and support centres also due to close in the near future.  The staff of the shops set to close were informed of the loss of their jobs on Wednesday morning, with the staff of the branches that are to remain open continuing to be fearful of whether their jobs will still be there in the coming weeks as the fate of the other Wilko branches continues to be uncertain.

A further 51 Wilko stores are being bought by B&M for £13 million, however it is likely that these branches will be rebranding to B&M stores following the end of the administration trading period as the company has not acquired the Wilko’s name or intellectual property. Although these 51 stores have been purchased, it is unknown whether the rest of the business will be purchased by other companies in the upcoming weeks. The store locations purchased by B&M have yet to be announced.
