The Legend Falls: A24’s ‘The Death of Robin Hood’ Sets Summer 2026 Release Date
LOS ANGELES — The era of the "Merry Men" is officially over. A24 has announced that The Death of Robin Hood, a dark and visceral reimagining of the English folk legend starring Hugh Jackman, will hit theaters across the United States on 19th June 2026.
The announcement, which arrived Tuesday via a haunting 14-second teaser on social media, positions the film as a major piece of summer counter-programming. By launching on the same weekend as Pixar’s Toy Story 5, A24 is betting that audiences are hungry for a gritty, R-rated deconstruction of a childhood icon.
A "Logan-Style" Retelling
Directed by Michael Sarnoski (Pig, A Quiet Place: Day One), the film is a far cry from the swashbuckling adventures of Kevin Costner or Errol Flynn. Drawing inspiration from a 17th-century ballad, the story follows an aging, battle-worn Robin Hood (Jackman) who has spent a lifetime as a "murderous outlaw" rather than a selfless hero.
“Robin Hood is a real man in our story,” Jackman told Entertainment Weekly. “With all the scars, the pain, the regret, and yes, the love. Mike [Sarnoski]’s story has weight to it. For me, it’s beautiful and human.”
The first trailer, which debuted in January, features a nearly unrecognizable Jackman sporting a massive gray beard and long, matted hair. His character is depicted as a man grappling with the "monstrous" reality of his crimes while the common folk begin to manufacture the "heroic" folklore that will eventually become his legacy.
A Star-Studded Rebellion
While Jackman anchors the film’s physical and emotional weight, he is joined by an elite ensemble cast:
-
Jodie Comer (Killing Eve): Plays a mysterious woman who discovers a gravely injured Robin after a final, brutal battle and offers him a last chance at salvation.
-
Bill Skarsgård (IT, Nosferatu): Appears in a reimagined, "intense" version of Little John.
-
Murray Bartlett (The White Lotus) and Noah Jupe (A Quiet Place): Round out the cast in currently undisclosed roles.
Production and Visuals
Filmed on location in Northern Ireland, the production utilized the region’s rugged, misty landscapes to create a "grounded and visceral" atmosphere. Sarnoski has teased that while the film is a character-driven drama, it will not lack for "bloody violence," with the MPA officially slapping the film with an R-rating for its "strong bloody combat."
The Summer Box Office Battle
The 19th June release date places The Death of Robin Hood in the middle of a crowded month. It will follow the release of Steven Spielberg's sci-fi epic Disclosure Day (June 12) and precede the debut of Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow (June 26).
For A24, the film represents one of its largest-scale productions to date. By pairing the director of Pig with the man who redefined the "aging hero" archetype in Logan, the studio appears to be aiming for both box office gold and a serious awards-season run.
