‘Live from London’: Sky Bets Big on ‘SNL UK’ with Eye-Popping £2M-Per-Episode Budget
LONDON, UK — In an era where British networks are notoriously tightening their belts, Sky is taking a gargantuan gamble on the "Live from London" experiment. Industry insiders have revealed that the new Saturday Night Live UK adaptation is operating with a budget nearly four times larger than the average British sketch show, signaling a high-stakes attempt to import the "prestige" of the 51-year-old American institution.
According to a report from Variety, each 75-minute episode of the Sky Original series is costing an estimated £2 million ($2.6 million) to produce. To put that in perspective, a typical high-end British sketch program or panel show generally operates on a budget of £300,000 to £500,000 per installment.
The TC1 Takeover: Why It’s So Expensive
A significant portion of the "eye-popping" price tag stems from the show’s rigid production requirements. Unlike most UK weekly shows that share studio space and "strike" their sets after every taping, SNL UK has secured exclusive, 24/7 access to the massive TC1 facility at Television Centre in London.
By locking down the studio for its entire eight-episode run, the production can maintain its complex sets, writing rooms, and technical infrastructure without the costly weekly dismantle-and-reset process. This exclusive residency reportedly forced The Graham Norton Show to find a temporary home for the spring season.
A Massive Creative Machine
The budget also accounts for a "writers' room" culture rarely seen in the UK. While British comedy traditionally relies on small teams or solo auteurs, SNL UK has hired a 20-person writing staff and an 11-member inaugural cast to ensure a five-day turnaround from script to live broadcast.
[Table: The Economics of UK Late-Night]
| Program | Estimated Cost Per Episode | Format Style |
| SNL UK (2026) | £2,000,000 | Live Variety / Sketch |
| Taskmaster | £450,000 | Pre-recorded Panel |
| 8 Out of 10 Cats | £350,000 | Studio Panel |
| Standard UK Sketch Show | £300,000 - £500,000 | Varied |
| SNL US (NBC) | $4,000,000 (~£3.1M) | Live Variety / Sketch |
The "Fey" Factor and Ratings Success
The investment appears to be paying early dividends. The series premiere on Saturday, March 21, hosted by SNL legend Tina Fey, drew nearly 230,000 viewers to Sky One, a significant "healthy start" for the channel.
Fey’s monologue set the tone for the adaptation, jokingly addressing the American-led launch:
“People ask, ‘Why an American host for the first episode?’ And the way it was explained to me was… none of you f***ers would do it.”
The premiere featured a star-studded audience including Michael Cera, Nicola Coughlan, and Rege-Jean Page, along with musical guest Wet Leg. Critically, the show has received "mixed but hopeful" reviews, with The Guardian noting it "did not fail" and praising its willingness to push boundaries—including the freedom to swear, which Fey utilized multiple times.
What’s Next for the Season?
Sky has already expressed immense confidence in the format, extending the initial six-episode order to eight episodes before the first episode even aired.
The upcoming schedule confirms the "big-ticket" nature of the production:
-
28th March: Hosted by Jamie Dornan with musical guest Wolf Alice.
-
4th April: Hosted by Riz Ahmed with musical guest Kasabian.
With episodes streaming on Peacock in the U.S. the day after they air in the UK, the "Live from London" experiment is as much a global export as it is a local comedy play. For Sky, the £16 million total season investment represents a belief that live, topical sketch comedy is a brand worth every penny.
