Tyler Rake Lives: ‘Extraction 3’ Finally Locks 2026 Filming Date in Major Franchise Update
SYDNEY, AUSTRALIA — The man who refuses to die is finally heading home. After nearly three years of "radio silence" following its initial announcement, Netflix has officially provided a major production update for Extraction 3. The high-octane sequel, starring Chris Hemsworth, is now confirmed to begin principal photography in June 2026.
The update marks a significant shift for the franchise. While the first film took audiences through the sweltering heat of Dhaka and the second braved the frozen landscapes of Georgia and Prague, the third installment will be primarily based in Sydney, Australia. This "homecoming" for Hemsworth follows years of the actor and director Sam Hargrave lobbying to bring the massive production to Australian soil.
The "Action Dream Team" Returns
Netflix is keeping its winning formula intact for the trilogy's conclusion. Sam Hargrave, the stunt-coordinator-turned-auteur who redefined the "one-take" action sequence, is back in the director’s chair. Joining him once again is screenwriter and producer Joe Russo, who is reportedly finalizing a script that delves deeper into Tyler Rake’s psychological scars while maintaining the franchise’s signature brutality.
“We’ve been deep in the ‘story-cracking’ phase for months,” Hargrave teased in a recent interview. “The goal with Extraction 3 isn't just to go bigger with the stunts—it's to go deeper with the man. We want to find out what Tyler Rake is actually fighting for now that he's survived the impossible twice.”
A Growing "Extraction" Universe
The update on the third film comes as Netflix aggressively expands the property into a full-scale cinematic universe. While fans wait for Hemsworth to suit up, two other major projects are already moving through the pipeline:
-
Extraction: Tygo: A South Korean spin-off film starring Don Lee (Train to Busan, Eternals) as a vengeful former child soldier. Recent reports indicate production on Tygo officially wrapped last week.
-
Mercenary: An Extraction Series: An eight-episode spin-off starring Omar Sy (Lupin), currently filming in North Africa and expected to debut before the third film hits screens.

A "Mission: Impossible" Upgrade
In a move that signals even higher ambitions for the sequel’s visual style, the production has tapped cinematographer Fraser Taggart. Taggart is best known for his recent work on the Mission: Impossible franchise, bringing a pedigree of high-stakes, practical action cinematography that aligns perfectly with Hargrave’s "real-deal" filmmaking philosophy.
Taggart replaces the previous films' cinematographers, who are reportedly tied up with Marvel's Avengers: Doomsday, a project Hemsworth is also rumored to be circling for a potential return as Thor.
The Long Road to Release
While the June filming start provides a "light at the end of the tunnel," fans will still need to be patient. Given the extensive post-production required for the franchise’s intricate, long-form action sequences, industry analysts suggest Extraction 3 won't hit Netflix until Summer or Fall 2027.
With a reported budget hovering near the $100 million mark and a two-continent shoot planned, Extraction 3 is shaping up to be Netflix's most ambitious original action movie to date.
