‘Deadpool Meets Game of Thrones’: Netflix Greenlights Bloody Fantasy Epic Barbaric

NEW YORK — Netflix has officially upped the ante in the fantasy arms race. During its major upfront presentation to advertisers on Wednesday, the streaming giant formally greenlit a live-action series adaptation of the cult-hit Vault Comics title Barbaric.

Described by critics and the streamer itself as a chaotic blend of Deadpool and Game of Thrones, the series promises to subvert traditional "sword-and-sorcery" tropes with a heavy dose of ultra-violence, pitch-black humour, and a talking, alcoholic weapon.

The Cursed Hero and His Bloodthirsty Axe

Based on the 2021 comic book created by writer Michael Moreci (Star Wars) and artist Nathan C. Gooden, Barbaric tells the story of Owen, a ruthless and crass barbarian who has been magically cursed to only use his immense strength for "good."

Compelled to do the right thing—often against his own nihilistic instincts, Owen wanders a primeval world accompanied by The Axe, a sentient, blood-drinking battle axe that serves as both his primary weapon and his moral (albeit frequently drunk) compass. The unlikely pair eventually teams up with a cynical young witch on a quest for revenge that threatens to upend the entire realm.

Barbaric is exactly the kind of boundary-pushing genre mashup our global audience craves,” said a Netflix spokesperson during the New York showcase. “It’s got the political stakes and world-building of a high-fantasy epic, but with the irreverent, fourth-wall-breaking energy of a contemporary action comedy.”

A ‘First Class’ Creative Team

Netflix has tapped Sheldon Turner (X-Men: First Class, Up in the Air) to write the adaptation and serve as co-showrunner. Joining him is Robert Rovner, a veteran of the Supergirl writers’ room, who will lead the series through its first season.

While official casting has yet to be formally announced, industry insiders are closely watching Sam Claflin (The Hunger Games, Daisy Jones & The Six). Claflin was attached to star as Owen when the project was originally in development as a feature film and remains officially signed on as an Executive Producer for the series via his Soft Claw Productions banner.

Vault Comics’ Biggest Leap

The move to production is a landmark moment for Vault Comics, the independent publisher behind the original series. Since its debut, Barbaric has become a runaway success, spawning spin-offs like Queen of Swords and selling more than 600,000 units to date.

The series joins a growing roster of prestige comic adaptations at Netflix, following in the footsteps of The Sandman, The Umbrella Academy, and Keanu Reeves’ upcoming BRZRKR film. However, Barbaric’s specific "Deadpool-esque" tone marks a new direction for Netflix’s medieval output, which has previously leaned into the more serious aesthetic of The Witcher.

The Verdict

With the formal greenlight now in place, Barbaric is expected to begin filming in late 2026. If the production can capture the comic's signature blend of "heart and decapitations," Netflix may have found its next big franchise, and the first one to feature a weapon with a drinking problem.
