New Crew, Same Chaos: ‘Cyberpunk: Edgerunners 2’ Confirmed for Autumn 2026 Release on Netflix

TOKYO — Netflix, CD Projekt Red, and Studio Trigger have officially sent shockwaves through the anime community by dropping the explosive first teaser trailer for Cyberpunk: Edgerunners 2, locking in an autumn 2026 global release window (trailer below).

The highly anticipated announcement follows a week of cryptic, daily character reveals across social media, culminating in the premier trailer launch on Monday 29th June. The project serves as the highly demanded follow-up to 2022's Cyberpunk: Edgerunners, which became a global streaming phenomenon and scooped up Anime of the Year honours.

However, fans looking for the resurrection of previous protagonists will find a completely clean slate. Studio Trigger has confirmed that the upcoming 10-episode series will function as a self-contained, standalone chronicle of "redemption and revenge," abandoning the tragic remnants of David Martinez's crew to spotlight a brand-new syndicate of cyber-enhanced mercenaries fighting to survive the neon-soaked gutter of Night City.

Meet Night City’s New Outcasts

The newly unveiled official key art and promotional materials have formally introduced the four distinct personalities anchoring the sequel's high-stakes narrative:

  • Weak Kingsley: Once known strictly across the underground network as "King," he is a grizzled, veteran mercenary who has slipped from the top of his game and now operates entirely in the bleak shadow of his former street glory.

  • D: A highly skilled, tech-hungry netrunner (hacker) hailing from the nomadic Snake Nation, whose primary motivation is a ruthless, singular obsession with hunting down the killer who entirely wiped out his clan.

  • Roman Carax: The youngest member of the faction; a dedicated cinephile search of authentic human stories in a hyper-artificial metropolis that has entirely abandoned traditional cinema in favour of highly addictive "braindances" (neural virtual realities).

  • Talia Yang: A volatile individual who was raised inside the pristine elite corporate towers but subsequently hardened by the brutal, body-modifying trials of the Maelstrom street gang. Her profile explicitly notes that her "heart belongs to chrome and violence."

The Creative Lineup Behind the Cyberware

To ensure the sequel retains the same hyper-kinetic, visceral energy that defined the original run, a powerhouse creative circle has been reassembled, albeit with a vital shift in the director's chair.

Kai Ikarashi—celebrated for directing the standout, action-heavy sixth episode of the original series ("Girl on Fire")—steps up as the primary director for Edgerunners 2. Character design duties have been handed to Ichigo Kanno (Delicious in Dungeon), while Hugo Award-winning writer Bartosz Sztybor returns to steady the ship as showrunner, co-writing the screenplay alongside Studio Trigger president Masahiko Otsuka.

Musically, the show looks set to deliver another sensory assault. The teaser features a pulsating original score by legendary composer Tsuneo Imahori, interlaced with a brand-new track titled "You Can't Run From Me", performed by American rap artist Rico Nasty.

Table: The Structural Evolution of the ‘Cyberpunk: Edgerunners’ Franchise

Production Season / Iteration Main Protagonist / Focus Primary Creative Director Narrative Blueprint / Status
Cyberpunk: Edgerunners (2022) David Martinez & Lucy Hiroyuki Imaishi Self-contained tragedy mapping a street kid's rapid fall
Cyberpunk: Edgerunners 2 (2026) Kingsley, D, Roman, and Talia Kai Ikarashi Standalone 10-episode arc tracking redemption and revenge

A Multiverse Expansion

The return to Night City comes at a critical juncture for CD Projekt Red. The Polish developer has aggressively weaponised external media to keep its landmark gaming intellectual property at the forefront of global pop culture.

Speaking at an animation showcase ahead of the trailer drop, Netflix executives expressed immense confidence that the sequel would replicate the cross-media success of its predecessor, which famously triggered a massive, multi-million-player resurgence for the Cyberpunk 2077 video game upon its release.

With Studio Trigger promising their signature brand of hyper-exaggerated, bone-shattering combat, the baseline expectation for emotional devastation remains exceptionally high. Further production secrets and footage are expected to be unveiled this weekend when the creative team hosts a flagship panel at Anime Expo in Los Angeles on 4th July, giving "chooms" worldwide plenty of time to brace their neural processors for the autumn slaughter.
