A horrific extreme sports accident in Brazil has resulted in the death of a 21-year-old woman after instructors launched her off an abandoned bridge without attaching her safety rope. Three men have been arrested in connection with the incident, which occurred on Saturday at the "Skeleton Bridge" (Ponte do Esqueleto), located on the border of Limeira and Cordeirópolis in the interior of São Paulo state.
The victim was identified as Maria Eduarda Rodrigues de Freitas. Shortly before her fatal plunge, she had shared a picture of the location on Instagram with the eerie caption:
"Who was the crazy person who let me come jump off a bridge???"
Chilling Video Captures the Fatal Error
Footage of the accident quickly went viral across social media platforms over the weekend. The video shows Rodrigues de Freitas wearing a helmet and standing near the edge with her arms outstretched. Two men wearing white helmets hold her by the arms while a third individual stands behind to lift her feet. Together, they hoist her up and cast her over the edge.
As she is thrown from the cliffside structure, onlookers instantly realize the safety gear is missing. People watching nearby begin to panic, with one witness screaming:
"Guys, the cord!"
Tragically, there was no safety mechanism attached to stop her descent. Rodrigues de Freitas plummeted 130 feet (40 meters) to the ground below. Emergency medical teams from SAMU arrived at the scene but confirmed that she did not survive the impact. She was buried the following day.
Understanding Rope-Jumping
While initial reports drew comparisons to bungee jumping, the extreme sport featured at the bridge is actually known as rope-jumping. Bungee Jumping relies on an elastic rubber cord that stretches vertically to create a bouncing movement, whereas rope-jumping uses low-stretch climbing ropes. These cords translate a vertical drop into a sweeping, horizontal pendulum swing. The sport has a history of high risk; its pioneer, American Dan Osman, died in 1998 at age 35 during a rope jump.
Three Men Arrested for Intentional Risk of Homicide
Following the incident, six individuals were brought into the Limeira Police District for questioning. Authorities subsequently arrested three men — aged 27, 32, and 42 — in flagrante (caught in the act).
The São Paulo Governor’s Office and local police confirmed that the men are being investigated for homicide with eventual intent (dolus eventualis). Under Brazilian law, this specific charge applies when individuals do not have a direct plan to kill someone but willfully engage in a highly dangerous activity, thereby assuming the risk of causing a death.
In a formal statement regarding the ongoing investigation, governor’s office said:
“According to the police report, at the time of the jump, the safety equipment was not properly fixed. The victim did not resist the fall and death was confirmed by SAMU (Serviço de Atendimento Móvel de Urgência, or emergency medical service) teams.”
A secondary statement from law enforcement added:
"The safety equipment was not properly secured at the time of the jump. The victim did not survive the fall. Investigations are ongoing to determine the circumstances and establish liability."
Local Government Launches Legal Action Over Abandoned Site
The tragedy has sparked a fierce administrative dispute over who is responsible for managing the site. The Skeleton Bridge has sat abandoned for years and officially falls under the jurisdiction of the federal government.
Following the accident, Brazil's Secretariat of Federal Assets announced it was ready to cooperate fully and "available to assist the authorities in the investigations".
However, the local municipality is pushing for stricter accountability. The City Hall of Limeira announced it plans to sue the federal government for failing to properly monitor and secure the area. Local officials stated they had already been adopting administrative measures and demanding action from the federal agencies responsible for the area.
With the death of the young woman, local authorities stated that the death "makes the continuation of this omission unsustainable and unacceptable"
While previous promotional videos from the bridge showed participants safely secured around the waist by a company called Entre Cordas, local authorities are still investigating whether the arrested operators belonged to a registered private business or an informal, unregulated gathering of extreme sports enthusiasts.
