UK Issues Statement on Senegal's Delayed Presidential Elections

In response to the announcement of delayed presidential elections in Senegal, the UK government has issued a statement emphasizing the importance of upholding democratic principles in the West African nation. A spokesperson from the Foreign, Commonwealth, and Development Office reiterated the UK's commitment to closely monitoring the situation in Senegal.

Given Senegal's longstanding democratic traditions, the UK government, in alignment with the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), called upon all parties to respect the decision made by the Constitutional Council on February 15th. Furthermore, the UK urged for transparent, inclusive, and credible elections to be organized promptly.

In the midst of the electoral uncertainty, the UK government stressed the necessity for all parties involved to exercise restraint, uphold calm, and abide by the rule of law. Additionally, they emphasized the importance of respecting the fundamental freedoms of the Senegalese people throughout this process.

Expressing condolences, the UK extended heartfelt sympathies to the families and friends of individuals who tragically lost their lives during recent protests. The statement underlines the UK's commitment to promoting peace, stability, and democracy in Senegal and across the wider West African region.

As Senegal navigates this critical period leading up to the rescheduled elections, the international community, including the UK, remains vigilant in supporting efforts to ensure a fair and democratic electoral process.
