Palworld Hits 40 Million Players

Palworld Hits 40 Million Players

The monster-battling survival phenomenon Palworld has achieved an astonishing new player milestone exactly two and a half years after its early access debut. Japanese developer Pocketpair announced that the hit game has officially surged past 40 million players, widening an already massive footprint as the title prepares for its official 1.0 launch on July 10th, 2026.

The achievement is a testament to the game's longevity. Palworld previously hit 32 million players in February 2025, meaning it successfully pulled in an additional eight million users over the last year alone while still in early access. Pocketpair's head of publishing and communications, John “Bucky” Buckley, previously called the game’s explosive metrics “unexplainable,” noting that “a lot of people don't realize how much of an anomaly that is.”

Palworld took the gaming world by storm in January 2024 with a viral concept often summarized as "Pokémon with guns." The game immediately smashed records on PC, becoming only the second game in Steam's history to reach two million concurrent players. It proved so wildly lucrative out of the gate that Pocketpair boss Takuro Mizobe admitted the studio initially struggled to handle the massive profits.

To capitalize on the breakout momentum, Pocketpair partnered with Sony to establish Palworld Entertainment to scale up the intellectual property, ultimately leading to a successful release on the PlayStation 5.

Fans have pointed out that Palworld’s 40 million player count mathematically eclipses the historical sales records of Pokémon's top-selling titles, the original Gen 1 trio of Pokémon Red, Blue, and Green, which collectively sold roughly 31,380,000 copies.

However, experts urge caution with the comparison. Every copy sold represents a player, but not every player represents a copy sold. Pocketpair's 40 million metric counts total players, which includes users accessing the game through console subscription services. Microsoft recently highlighted the 1.0 version as part of its wave-one Xbox Game Pass lineup for July 2026, which continues to drive immense traffic alongside standard retail sales.

Ahead of the full release, Pocketpair released a retrospective video detailing the massive content updates introduced during early access, including the Sakurajima and Home Sweet Home expansions, which added new regions, features, and Pals.

For the upcoming 1.0 launch, Buckley teased an enormous day-one patch consisting of 27 pages of notes, featuring complete mechanical overhauls and brand-new content. While existing players will be permitted to transfer their progression, Buckley issued a strong recommendation for a fresh start.

“Players can continue their existing saves if they wish, as we want to respect the time and effort you have put in,” Buckley explained via Discord. “However, due to the large number of changes to the game, including overhauls to mechanics and new content, we believe that starting a new character will give you the best experience of Palworld! We will leave that choice up to you, Pal Tamers!”

The game's monumental rise has not been entirely smooth sailing. Its overt similarities to Pokémon eventually drew the legal ire of Nintendo and The Pokémon Company. Rather than pursuing standard copyright infringement, the platform owners chose a patent-based lawsuit, demanding an injunction to block the game alongside a relatively minor 5 million yen (roughly $30,000) each plus late payment damages.

Legal experts note that it appears Nintendo is unable to completely monopolize the monster-battling genre, and a final judicial ruling on the matter is anticipated later this year.

Regardless of the legal friction, Pocketpair remains entirely focused on celebrating its community. Taking to social media, the studio expressed its deep gratitude to the fanbase that made the anomaly possible.

“Thank you all so much for your incredible support!” the studio wrote. “Over the last 2.5 years, Palworld has grown alongside our community.”
