HORSE POWER: Psy’s ‘Gangnam Style’ Becomes First K-Pop Music Video to Hit 6 Billion YouTube Views

SEOUL — Fourteen years after its viral release reshaped global pop culture, South Korean musician Psy’s megahit Gangnam Style has achieved another monumental streaming milestone, becoming the first K-pop music video in history to cross 6 billion views on YouTube.

The iconic 2012 video officially breached the 6 billion mark on the afternoon of Friday 17th July 2026. The milestone was formally announced by Psy’s management agency, P Nation, on Monday, following a weekend of celebrations during the artist's ongoing Summerswag 2026 national concert tour.

The feat solidifies Gangnam Style’s status as a generational phenomenon. Having previously surpassed 5 billion views on 30 December 2023, the satirical pop anthem added a further 1 billion views in just under two years and seven months, an extraordinary rate of accumulation for a decade-and-a-half-old release.

A Cultural Pioneer That Rewrote Digital History

When Gangnam Style dropped on 15th July 2012, its surreal music video featuring Psy’s signature horse-riding choreography and a cheeky parody of Seoul’s ultra-affluent Gangnam district, instantly captivated internet audiences across the globe.

In December 2012, the video made global headlines by becoming the first video in YouTube’s history to reach 1 billion views, famously causing the platform’s view counter to break and forcing Google engineers to upgrade YouTube’s architecture to accommodate 64-bit integers.

Beyond its digital dominance, the song peaked at number two on the UK Singles Chart and spent seven consecutive weeks at number two on the US Billboard Hot 100, widely credited by music historians with opening the floodgates for Western mainstream acceptance of K-pop giants like BTS and BLACKPINK.

Reflecting on the achievement, P Nation described the 6 billion milestone as a testament to the track's timeless cross-generational appeal:

“Surpassing 6 billion views is not only a symbolic milestone in the history of K-pop, but it demonstrates the enduring power of content that continues to be enjoyed across countries and generations,” the agency stated in an official dispatch.

The Blue Tuxedo Returns

Psy, 48, celebrated the historic record in front of thousands of fans during his Summerswag 2026 concert in Gwacheon on Sunday evening, taking to the stage wearing the very same iconic blue tuxedo featured in the 2012 music video.

Addressing the roaring stadium crowd, the singer expressed his gratitude for the video's long-standing longevity: "I'll post footage from today's performance on YouTube to thank fans for helping the video reach 6 billion views," he announced.

Milestone Date Achieved Historical Significance
1 Billion Views December 2012 First video in YouTube history to clear 1 billion views
2 Billion Views May 2014 Maintained record as YouTube's most-watched video
5 Billion Views December 2023 First K-pop video to surpass 5 billion views
6 Billion Views 17 July 2026 Enters the elite global 6-billion club alongside Luis Fonsi & Ed Sheeran

With its entry into the 6-billion-view club, Gangnam Style joins an elite group of immortal YouTube juggernauts including Luis Fonsi's Despacito, Wiz Khalifa's See You Again, and Ed Sheeran's Shape of You. Fourteen years on from its debut, Psy’s horse dance continues to prove that viral gold never truly loses its gallop.
