MPs back plan to release Mandelson files after Labour anger forces climbdown

anger

The UK government has agreed to release documents relating to Lord Mandelson’s appointment as the UK’s ambassador to the United States. This follows a dramatic session in the House of Commons where Sir Keir Starmer faced heavy criticism from both opposition MPs and his own backbenchers over what the government knew about Mandelson's ties to Jeffrey Epstein.

The files are expected to shed light on the "due diligence" carried out before the appointment in 2024. While the government initially resisted a full disclosure, it was forced to change course after senior figures, including Angela Rayner, pushed for greater transparency.

🏛️ The Commons Debate and Mandelson’s Dismissal

Sir Keir Starmer told MPs that he had been "deceived" about the true "depth and darkness" of Lord Mandelson's friendship with Epstein. He admitted he knew of a relationship at the time of the appointment but claimed Mandelson had "lied repeatedly" to officials about the extent of their contact.

  • The Appointment (2024): Lord Mandelson was appointed as the UK’s top diplomat in Washington to liaise with the Trump administration.

  • The Dismissal (September 2025): He was sacked after emails revealed he had maintained a friendship with Epstein even after the financier’s 2008 conviction for sex offences involving a minor.

  • The Apology: Sir Keir recently apologised to Epstein’s victims, stating he "regretted" the appointment and that Mandelson had "betrayed our country."

⚖️ Criminal Investigation and Allegations

The Metropolitan Police has launched a formal investigation into Lord Mandelson for misconduct in public office. This is a serious offence that can carry a maximum sentence of life imprisonment.

  • Leaking Sensitive Data: New documents suggest that while Mandelson was Business Secretary (2008–2010), he may have sent market-sensitive information to Epstein. This reportedly included advance notice of a €500 billion Eurozone bailout and internal memos about selling off government assets.

  • Financial Payments: Bank records suggest Epstein sent three payments totalling $75,000 to accounts linked to Mandelson or his husband in 2003–2004. Lord Mandelson has said he has "no recollection" of these payments.

  • "Forever" Titles: Although Mandelson has resigned from the Labour Party and retired from the House of Lords, he still holds his noble title. The government is currently drafting legislation to officially strip him of his peerage and his membership in the Privy Council.

📂 What Happens Next?

The Intelligence and Security Committee (ISC) will now review the most sensitive files to decide what can be made public without harming national security. The Conservative leadership has accused the government of trying to "sabotage" the process, but the Prime Minister has promised that "all material" underpinning the appointment will eventually be published.
