McDonald's workers open up about sexual abuse

More than 100 current and recent UK staff claimed there is an ongoing toxic culture of sexual assault, racism or even harassment in the chain of McDonald's, which is currently one of the most important fast-food companies in the whole world.

BBC made an investigation and wrote about this important issue. As we read on their page, "The BBC was told that workers, some as young as 17, are being groped and harassed almost routinely."

Later, they continue that, "The BBC began investigating working conditions at McDonald's in February, after the company signed a legally binding agreement with the Equality and Human Rights Commission (EHRC) in which it pledged to protect its staff from sexual harassment.

McDonald's already apologised, however, the whole topic will just begin.

Alistair Macrow, chief executive of McDonald's UK & Ireland, told BBC that "every one of the 177,000 employees in McDonald's UK deserves to work in a safe, respectful and inclusive workplace. There are clearly instances where we have fallen short and for that we deeply apologise."

Furthermore, the Equality and Human Rights Commission launched an entirely new email hotline. Here, the workers of McDonald's (both previous and recent) can send anonymous messages and bring up any concerning experiences. This will allow the watchdog institution to collect more data for the upcoming investigation.

The entire investigation was by BBC reporters: Noor Nanji, Zoe Conway and Ellie Layhe.
