Funk Never Fades: Mýa Announces ‘Retrospect,’ Her First Full-Length Album in Eight Years

NEW YORK — The "Queen of Independence" is officially ending her longest studio hiatus to date. During a high energy appearance on the Sherri show on Monday, R&B icon Mýa announced the upcoming release of her tenth studio album, Retrospect, scheduled to arrive in Spring 2026.

The project marks the Grammy winner’s first full length studio effort since 2018’s T.K.O. (The Knock Out). While Mýa has remained a fixture on the touring circuit and released several successful independent singles in the interim, Retrospect is being billed as a definitive "return to roots" for the 46-year-old artist.

A Decade in the Making

Though the eight-year gap between albums may seem significant, Mýa revealed that Retrospect has been a labor of love for nearly a decade, with early recording sessions dating back to 2016. The album is a sonic tribute to the music that filled her childhood home, specifically late-70s and 80s funk and soul.

“Music wasn’t just a part of my life; it was the heartbeat of my home, the foundation of my joy,” Mýa told host Sherri Shepherd. “This album is a celebration of that—the kind of funk that never fades. It’s a bridge between the past and the future, honoring the greats like Prince and Teena Marie while forging something new.”

The Lead Single: ‘ASAP’

To kick off the new era, Mýa released the album's lead single, "ASAP," on Friday 30th January. Co-produced by the singer alongside Lamar “MyGuyMars” Edwards, the track is a "sultry, 80s-tinged midtempo groove" that emphasizes the importance of open communication in relationships.

The song has already made a significant impact, debuting at No. 22 on the Billboard Adult R&B Songs chart this week marking Mýa’s first entry on that specific chart and proving the enduring appetite for her signature "feel-good" sound.

Genre-Blurring Collaborations

While the album leans heavily into nostalgic funk, the confirmed guest list suggests Mýa is still focused on contemporary relevance. The singer confirmed that the project will feature appearances from:

  • 21 Savage

  • Joyner Lucas

By blending old-school soul production with top-tier modern hip-hop talent, Mýa continues to demonstrate the genre-fluidity that has defined her 28-year career.

Independent Innovation

Retrospect will be released through Mýa’s own independent label, Planet 9, in partnership with Virgin Music Group. Long before "going independent" became a trend for established stars, Mýa pioneered the model, revealing on Sherri that the late legend Prince was a key mentor who encouraged her to take full ownership of her masters and creative direction.

The album will also push technical boundaries, set to be available in Dolby Atmos and Sony 360 Reality Audio to provide an immersive "inside the music" experience for listeners.

As the industry reflects on the 25th anniversary of her smash hit "Lady Marmalade" this year, Mýa is proving that she isn't interested in just living in the past she’s busy soundtracking the future.
