Kingussie Kong Captured After Wild Highland Adventure
A mischievous monkey named Honshu, affectionately dubbed "Kingussie Kong," has been successfully captured after a five-day escapade in the Scottish Highlands.
The seven-year-old Japanese macaque managed to slip out of his enclosure at the Highland Wildlife Park near Kingussie last Sunday, but Honshu's freedom came to an end when he was found snacking in a local garden less than two miles away, drawn by an enticing spread that included leftover Yorkshire pudding intended for the birds.
The Royal Zoological Society of Scotland (RZSS), which oversees the park, expressed gratitude to the local community for their patience during the search and acknowledged the professionalism of their staff.
After being tranquilised and returned to the park, Honshu appears to be in good health, having “consumed quite a lot of peanuts”' during his time in the wild. David Field, CEO of RZSS, confirmed, "Honshu has been carefully monitored by our vets and keepers and is doing really well." The monkey will now undergo a gradual reintroduction to his group, easing back into the company of other sub-adult males.
Honshu's unexpected adventure turned him into a global celebrity, showcasing the conservation efforts of the Royal Zoological Society of Scotland. The incident also highlighted the need for a review of security measures around the macaque enclosure. Despite the excitement, it seems the Yorkshire pudding that initially lured Honshu played a crucial role in his recapture, proving once again that even the most adventurous monkeys can't resist a tempting treat.
