EU Investigates Microsoft's Security Software Practices

EU Investigates Microsoft's Security Software Practices

The European Commission launched an investigation into Microsoft's conduct regarding its security software. The probe focuses on whether Microsoft is restricting customers from using competing security software, particularly in its Entra ID (formerly Azure Active Directory) service.

Over the years, companies have raised concerns about Microsoft's bundling practices and its approach to cloud computing, prompting European regulators to scrutinize the tech giant's actions. Microsoft has maintained that it has addressed these concerns raised by its competitors.

The Entra ID software enables companies to manage access to their cloud-based applications. The European Commission is examining whether Microsoft is limiting customers' ability to use alternative authentication software or if they are required to also use Entra ID for accessing Microsoft services.

While details of the investigation were initially reported by The Information, citing a document sent to a Microsoft competitor, Alphabet's Google has also weighed in, criticizing Microsoft's cloud computing practices. Google alleges that Microsoft's actions could lead to a monopoly that stifles the growth of emerging technologies such as generative artificial intelligence. Microsoft has refuted these claims.

Neither the European Commission nor Microsoft immediately responded to requests for comment on the matter. The investigation underscores ongoing concerns about competition in the tech industry and the European Commission's commitment to ensuring fair practices and innovation within the market.
