EU Decries Low Women Representation in Politics

International Women's Day (IWD) Address:

In a statement released on Thursday to commemorate International Women’s Day the European Union (EU) emphasized the inadequate representation of women in political offices, labeling it a hindrance to just gender representation in politics.

Statistics Reveal Gender Disparity:

The statement highlighted the current statistics, revealing that despite progress, the proportion of female members in single or lower houses of parliament stands at an average of only 33% in EU Member States and 26.5% globally. The EU expressed a pressing need for increased efforts to inspire and include women in politics.

Landmark Year for Elections:

With 2024 being a landmark year for elections worldwide, including the European Parliament elections in June, the EU underscored the importance of women's participation in shaping societal structures. It recognized the historical efforts of suffragettes and encouraged women, particularly young women, to exercise their right to vote and engage in political life.

Global Theme of Inclusion:

The global theme for the 2024 International Women’s Day, "Inspire Inclusion," aligns with the United Nations' theme, "Invest in women: Accelerate progress." The EU emphasized the essential role of women's participation, particularly in decision-making positions, in societal progress.

High-Level Event and Discussions:

On March 6, 2024, Vice-President Jourová initiated the Commission’s "Women in Public Life" high-level event in Brussels. Discussions focused on challenges faced by women in politics, journalism, and civil society, aiming to identify solutions to enhance women's retention in public-facing roles.

Persisting Underrepresentation:

Despite efforts, the EU lamented that women remain underrepresented in politics. In 2023, only six Member States achieved a gender balance of greater than 40% in their parliament members, while seven Member States had fewer than 25% female MPs.

The Commission's Commitment to Gender Equality:

The EU Commission has been proactive in advancing gender equality. Notable achievements include the recent political agreement on combating violence against women and domestic violence and the adoption of directives promoting equal pay and work-life balance rights.

Ongoing Efforts and Initiatives:

The EU highlighted various ongoing initiatives, including the establishment of networks, funding for gender equality projects, and commitments to international action plans. These efforts aim to address gender-based violence, promote women's political participation, and empower women globally.

Despite significant strides, the EU acknowledges the persistent challenges of achieving gender equality in politics. The Commission reaffirmed its commitment to advancing gender equality through legislative measures, international cooperation, and societal awareness, emphasizing the importance of inclusive and representative political systems for a fairer and more equal society.
