Walmart Recalls Shrimp Over Radiation Concerns

Walmart Recalls Shrimp Over Radiation Concerns

Walmart has recalled several batches of its Great Value frozen shrimp from shelves in 13 states after concerns over potential radioactive contamination. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) said the shrimp, imported from Indonesia, may have been exposed to Cesium-137, a radioactive isotope linked to nuclear accidents like Chernobyl and Fukushima. While no contaminated products entered the food supply, the FDA still advised customers to throw out shrimp from three specific lot codes as a precaution.

The recalled batches are:

Great Value frozen raw shrimp, lot code: 8005540-1, Best by Date: 3/15/2027

Great Value frozen raw shrimp, lot code: 8005538-1, Best by Date: 3/15/2027

Great Value frozen raw shrimp, lot code: 8005539-1, Best by Date: 3/15/2027

The affected shrimp came from BMS Foods, a supplier in Indonesia, whose shipping containers tested positive for radiation at ports in Los Angeles, Houston, Miami, and Savannah. One sample of breaded shrimp tested positive, though it was never sold. Still, the FDA noted that even low-level, long-term exposure to Cesium-137 “could lead to health problems over time.” Walmart said, “We have issued a sales restriction and removed this product from our impacted stores.”

Consumers in the 13 affected states including Florida, Texas, and Pennsylvania can return the recalled shrimp for a full refund. The FDA has also halted imports from BMS Foods while investigating. Although experts say the health risk is low, the agency is urging caution. “If you have recently purchased raw frozen shrimp from Walmart that matches this description, throw it away,” the FDA warned.
