Tyreek Hill Calls for Officer's Firing After Aggressive Traffic Stop Near Dolphins Game
Miami Dolphins star Tyreek Hill is calling for the immediate firing of Officer Danny Torres, who was involved in a tense traffic stop with the player on September 8th.
Hill, through his lawyer Julius Collins, described the officer’s actions as “excessive, escalating, and reckless.”
What happened?
The wide receiver was pulled over near Hard Rock Stadium just before the Dolphins' game against the Jacksonville Jaguars, receiving citations for reckless driving and driving without a licence.
Footage from the traffic stop shows officers aggressively removing Hill from his car after he refused to fully roll down his window. In the video, Hill can be heard telling officers, “Don’t tell me what to do,” before they forced him out and handcuffed him.
Hill said, "I wasn't moving fast because I've got injuries... I play a physical sport." At one point, an officer put a knee on Hill’s back while another placed him in a chokehold, sparking widespread criticism.
Several Dolphins players, including tight end Jonnu Smith and defensive tackle Calais Campbell, witnessed the incident and stopped to intervene. Campbell, a respected veteran in the league, was briefly handcuffed but later released without any charges.
Hill expressed gratitude for their support, saying, "When I saw Jonnu and Calais pull up, I didn’t feel alone anymore."
Hill later reflected on the situation, saying, "If I wasn’t Tyreek Hill, Lord knows... I would have been shot or locked up."
Despite the ordeal, Hill maintained his performance on the field, catching seven passes for 130 yards and scoring a crucial touchdown in Miami’s 20-17 victory.
Hill calls for officer involved in incident to be fired
Hill’s lawyer has demanded Torres be fired, stating, "Each action that a law enforcement official takes is governed by standard operating procedures… We are demanding that the officer be terminated effective immediately."
The Miami-Dade Police Department confirmed that Torres has been placed on administrative leave, pending an internal investigation.
The police union defended the officers, saying Hill was “not immediately cooperative” and that the officers followed protocol.
However, Hill’s agent Drew Rosenhaus strongly criticised the officers, telling The Dan Le Batard Show, "Look at the guy who kicked him — that guy should be fired... Tyreek wasn’t being aggressive or violent in any way."
Hill is now focusing on making sure that what happened to him is not ignored, particularly for others in Black and minority communities.
He emphasised the larger issues at play, stating, "We cannot ignore this fact and remain silent on the issue just because it’s a tough conversation."
As the investigation continues, Hill awaits justice, hoping for change in how similar situations are handled in the future.
