Storm Darragh Set to Hit the UK with Damaging Winds and Heavy Rain
Storm Darragh is expected to bring severe weather to large parts of the UK starting late Friday, with strong winds and heavy rain continuing into Saturday. The Met Office has issued amber and yellow warnings for various regions, advising residents to prepare for potential disruptions and hazards.
Winds of Up to 80mph
Gusts of 70-80mph are forecast for coastal areas from Cornwall to southwest Scotland and Northern Ireland, while inland areas could experience winds of 60-70mph. The strongest winds are expected between 3 a.m. and 9 p.m. on Saturday, prompting an amber weather warning in those regions. Jason Kelly, Chief Forecaster at the Met Office, warned that these winds could cause building damage, power cuts, and travel delays, especially for ferry services in the Irish Sea.
Rainfall and Flood Risks
Heavy rainfall will accompany the winds, with northern and western parts of the UK seeing the most significant impact. Rainfall totals could reach up to 60mm (2.36 inches) in parts of Wales and Scotland by Saturday afternoon, with possible localized flooding. A yellow warning for rain is in place until midday on Saturday. Other areas may see up to 25mm (1 inch) of rain, though the overall impact is expected to be less severe than the recent Storm Bert.
Snow in Northern Scotland
In higher-altitude regions of northern Scotland, snow is likely as Storm Darragh passes. Areas above 200 meters could see accumulations, adding to travel complications in these locations.
Travel and Safety Concerns
National Highways has urged drivers to check their vehicles and adjust their driving for the challenging conditions. Dale Hipkiss, Duty Manager at National Highways, emphasized the importance of preparing for journeys, telling drivers to “check their vehicles, such as tyres, coolant and oil levels, before heading out to reduce the risk of breakdowns.”
Extended Yellow Warnings
In addition to the amber warning, yellow weather alerts cover much of the UK from Friday afternoon through early Sunday. Winds of 40-50mph are expected inland, with more intense gusts along the coasts. The Met Office highlighted that the storm would gradually move eastward, leaving the UK by Sunday morning.
Tips for Staying Safe
Residents are encouraged to monitor the weather updates via the Met Office website, app, or social media channels. Adjustments to travel plans and precautions to secure outdoor items are advised as Storm Darragh makes its way across the country.
