Putin Says Western Troops In Ukraine Will Be Targets For Russian Forces

Russia has slammed a Western plan to send troops to Ukraine as part of a post-war “reassurance force,” with President Vladimir Putin warning that any foreign soldiers deployed, even after a ceasefire, would be considered “legitimate targets.” His remarks come after 26 countries, led by France and the UK, pledged to provide troops by land, sea, or air to help secure Ukraine once the fighting stops. French President Emmanuel Macron said the goal is to prevent “any new major aggression,” not to engage in direct conflict with Russia.

The Paris summit was a clear attempt by Europe to assert leadership, especially as uncertainty grows over how far the US will go. While former President Donald Trump, currently acting in a diplomatic role, has suggested potential air support, he ruled out ground troops. Ukraine's President Volodymyr Zelensky welcomed the troop commitment, calling it the “first such serious concrete step” in securing the country’s future. However, divisions remain within the coalition, with countries like Germany and Italy hesitant to send forces without a finalized peace deal.

Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov dismissed the plan as “definitely not” acceptable, insisting it would threaten Russian security. Putin, meanwhile, questioned the need for foreign troops if long-term peace is achievable and reiterated that no one had seriously discussed the security framework with Russia. As the war grinds on past its third year, both sides accuse the other of stalling. While Europe pushes for more pressure on Moscow, many believe Putin is simply buying time to gain more ground.
