Messi Addresses Controversy Over Hong Kong Match No-Show
Footballer Lionel Messi has addressed the controversy surrounding his absence from a friendly match in Hong Kong. In a video posted on Chinese social media platform Weibo, Messi directly spoke to his fans in mainland China and Hong Kong, insisting that his absence was not politically motivated.
Messi stated, "I've heard people say that I didn't want to play for political reasons and many other reasons that are totally untrue." The 36-year-old attributed his no-show to a groin injury, which had affected his performance in Saudi Arabia and ultimately prevented him from playing in Hong Kong. The footballer also expressed his "special affection" for China and its people, emphasising that he would not have travelled to Japan or visited China if there were political motivations.
Despite Messi's efforts to explain his absence, the fallout has been extensive. Two upcoming friendlies involving Argentina have been cancelled, with the relevant authorities citing the controversy as the cause. The controversy has led to speculation, with the Global Times suggesting "political motives" and external forces attempting to embarrass Hong Kong.
The fallout from the Hong Kong game also prompted Tatler Asia, the match organisers, to offer a 50% refund on tickets. Messi's video on Weibo has sparked mixed reactions, with some expressing scepticism and others showing continued support. Despite the controversy, the football icon remains a prominent figure in China, serving as a spokesperson for various Chinese brands, including Huawei, Chery, Tencent, Mengniu, Chishui River Wine, and J&T Express.
