McLaren to Exit Formula E After 2024-25 Season

McLaren has confirmed it will exit Formula E after the 2024-25 season, choosing to refocus on Formula 1, IndyCar, and its upcoming 2027 entry into the World Endurance Championship. CEO Zak Brown said, “The time is right to explore other opportunities that more closely align with McLaren Racing’s overall strategic direction,” adding that the team is working to secure a new owner to continue its Formula E journey.
Since joining Formula E in 2022 by acquiring the former Mercedes team, McLaren’s electric racing squad has operated independently from its F1 and IndyCar outfits. Despite limited success—just one race win in three seasons—the team currently sits third in the standings. Team principal Ian James praised the group’s “incredible journey” and emphasized their commitment to finishing strong, saying, “We will be giving our all to make sure that we finish the current chapter of our Formula E adventure in style.”
Formula E organizers expressed confidence the team would remain in the championship under new ownership. A spokesperson said, “The commercial landscape in motorsport is dynamic and often subject to change,” but added that discussions with potential investors are already underway. McLaren’s exit marks another shake-up for the electric series, but the team insists it remains proud of its contribution to the sport’s evolution.
