Mark Carney Sworn in as Canada's Prime Minister

Mark Carney has officially been sworn in as Canada’s new prime minister, replacing Justin Trudeau after winning the Liberal Party leadership in a landslide. The former governor of the Bank of England, who has never held elected office, takes charge at a time of escalating tensions with U.S. President Donald Trump over trade. Carney has pledged to keep retaliatory tariffs in place, saying Canada will only negotiate "when there is respect for Canadian sovereignty."

Trump's recent tariffs on Canadian steel and aluminum have sparked a trade war, with Canada responding by imposing nearly C$30 billion in duties on U.S. goods. Carney condemned the tariffs as "unjustified" and accused Trump of "attacking Canadian families, workers, and businesses." Meanwhile, Trump has openly floated the idea of annexing Canada, fueling a wave of nationalist sentiment that has boosted Carney’s party in the polls.

With a minority government, Carney is expected to call a snap election soon, as opposition parties have threatened to bring him down in a confidence vote. The race is shaping up to be a tight battle between the Liberals and Conservatives, but growing Canadian frustration with Trump’s policies may give Carney an edge. "The Americans should make no mistake," he warned. "In trade, as in hockey, Canada will win."
