Coco Gauff To Be Female Flag Bearer For Team USA

Coco Gauff, the 2023 US Open champion, is set to make her Olympic debut in style as she takes on the role of USA's female flag bearer at the Opening Ceremony of the Paris 2024 Olympic Games on July 26.

At just 20 years old, Gauff will become the first U.S. tennis player in history and the youngest American to carry the flag during the Opening Ceremony. Joining her is basketball legend LeBron James, who was named the US men's flag bearer, marking his fourth Olympic appearance.

“I never thought in a million years I would have the honour of carrying the American flag for Team USA in the Opening Ceremony,” Gauff said in the U.S. Olympic and Paralympic Committee (USOPC) announcement. “I could not be more proud to lead my teammates with LeBron as we showcase our dedication and passion on the biggest stage there is.”

Gauff’s Olympic debut follows an impressive few years in her career, highlighted by her victory at the 2023 US Open and a doubles title at the 2024 French Open. Currently ranked No. 2 in the world, she is set to compete in singles and women's doubles, aiming for medals in all both categories.

Gauff's unfortunately missed the Tokyo Games due to testing positive for COVID-19.

The USOPC noted that Gauff and James were selected as flag bearers through a vote by their fellow U.S. athletes. USOPC CEO Sarah Hirshland praised Gauff, stating, "To be nominated by your teammates for this honour speaks volumes about the way in which Coco approaches her sport and her role as a member of Team USA."

Gauff, who burst onto the international scene five years ago by defeating Venus Williams at Wimbledon, has continued to rise in prominence. Her remarkable journey from a teenage sensation to a Grand Slam champion has made her an inspiring figure in the sports world.

The Opening Ceremony in Paris promises to be a unique event, as it will be held on the River Seine, marking the first time in summer Olympic history that the ceremony will take place outside the main stadium. This sets the stage for a memorable introduction for Gauff and James as they lead Team USA.

LeBron James, a four-time NBA champion, adds a seasoned presence to the team. Together with Gauff, they embody a blend of youthful vigour and experienced leadership, making them a dynamic duo to lead the U.S. delegation.
