Andrés Iniesta, the legendary Spanish midfielder, has officially announced his retirement from professional football at the age of 40. Regarded as one of the greatest players of all time, Iniesta has left his mark on the sport, especially through his partnerships with icons like Xavi Hernández and Sergio Busquets at both Barcelona and the Spanish national team. 

 

Over 22 years, he made 131 appearances for Spain, famously scoring the winning goal in the 2010 FIFA World Cup final, and also clinching the European Championship titles in 2008 and 2012.

 

"I never thought this day would come. I never imagined it," Iniesta expressed in an emotional farewell video shared on social media. "Yes, all these tears we have shed these days are tears of emotion, of pride."

 

From small town famous footballer

Iniesta's football journey began at age 12 when he joined Barcelona's famed La Masia academy. He made his senior debut for the club in 2002 and spent the majority of his career there, racking up an impressive 32 trophies, including nine La Liga titles and four Champions League victories. His tenure at Barça saw him make nearly 700 appearances, becoming a central figure in a golden era for the club.

 

After leaving Barcelona in 2018, Iniesta played for Vissel Kobe in Japan, where he celebrated a J1 League title in 2023. He later joined Emirates in the UAE Pro League but has now decided to hang up his boots, despite having the option to extend his contract until 2025. 

 

His impact on football goes beyond trophies; he was also a finalist for the Ballon d'Or in 2010 and earned a spot in the FIFA FIFPro World XI for nine consecutive years.
