6.5 Magnitude Earthquake Strikes Off The Coast of Indonesia's Java Island
A magnitude 6.5 earthquake was reported off the coast of Indonesia’s Java island today. According to Indonesia’s geophysics agency, the BKMG, it was located 10 km below the surface, with an epicentre around 130 km north of Tuban in East Java province. The quake followed a magnitude 6 tremor that had been reported hours earlier, with the quake being felt 600 km away in Indonesian capital Jakarta according to Reuters witnesses.
Reports indicate that buildings near the affected area suffered damage, with a house and a village town hall collapsing in Tuban district. However, there have been no immediate reports of casualties. Despite the intensity of the quake, BMKG has assured that there is no risk of a tsunami. Indonesia, nestled in the Pacific "Ring of Fire," experiences frequent seismic activities due to its geological location.
