2024 London Marathon Breaks Record with £73.5 Million Raised for Charity

2024 London Marathon Breaks Record with £73.5 Million Raised for Charity

The 2024 London Marathon has broken its own record for fundraising, after raising a staggering £73.5 million ($98.28 million) for charity this year according to event organisers.

This new total surpasses the previous world record of £66.4 million, set by the London Marathon in 2019, making it the largest single-day fundraising event in the world. Over 53,000 runners completed the race on April 21st 2024, contributing to this incredible total.

The cumulative total raised by the London Marathon since its creation in 1981 now exceeds £1.3 billion.

Hugh Brasher, CEO of London Marathon Events, celebrated the achievement, saying, “We salute every single participant who has contributed to this world record-breaking total of £73.5 million for the thousands of charities which provide essential services to so many.”

£30 million of the funds was raised through Enthuse, the official online fundraising partner of the marathon.

Chester Mojay-Sinclare, CEO of Enthuse, said: "Charities play a crucial role in the UK and this outstanding fundraising total is a reflection of people's gratitude towards them."

Samaritans see record-breaking donations during marathon

The 2024 charity of the year, Samaritans, also saw record-breaking contributions. The charity raised over £1.1 million, four times more than its usual annual total from the marathon.

Sonya Trivedy, Samaritans' executive director of external engagement, called it a “landmark moment” for the organisation, adding that the funds will continue to support their message of hope, "Believe in Tomorrow."

Other charities also benefited massively from the marathon’s fundraising success. Macmillan Cancer Support raised more than £2.1 million, with challenge events manager Emma Pound calling it a crucial part of their income to support those living with cancer.

As for the future, the 2025 London Marathon is already shaping up to be another massive event, with over 840,000 people applying for a spot, breaking the previous year’s record of 578,304 applications.

The next race is scheduled for April 27th, 2025, and expectations are high for yet another impressive fundraising total.
