First Clayface Poster Confirms R-Rated Body Horror for DC Studios

‘The Fly’ Meets Gotham: First Clayface Poster Confirms R-Rated Body Horror for DC Studios

BURBANK — James Gunn’s new DC Universe is officially taking a turn for the grotesque. Following a week of viral teasers and "disfigurement" warnings, DC Studios has unveiled the first official poster and trailer for Clayface, confirming that the film will be a visceral, R-rated body horror production in the vein of David Cronenberg’s The Fly (trailer below).

The haunting artwork, shared by Gunn on social media on Wednesday afternoon, features a close-up profile of star Tom Rhys Harries (The Gentlemen) as Matt Hagen. In a stark departure from traditional superhero marketing, Harries’ jawline and skin appear to be literally melting off the bottom of the frame, revealing the unstable, magical clay beneath.

A ‘Masterpiece of Tragedy’

Directed by James Watkins (Speak No Evil) and written by horror titan Mike Flanagan (The Haunting of Hill House), the film is being described as a "theatrical tragedy" rather than a standard villain origin story.

The plot, inspired by the seminal "Feat of Clay" episodes of Batman: The Animated Series, follows Matt Hagen, a struggling B-movie actor in Gotham City. After a brutal gang attack leaves his face disfigured, Hagen turns to an untested "regenerative medicine" known as Renu You. While the substance initially restores his handsome features, his cellular structure quickly becomes unstable, turning him into a living, melting mass of clay.

“This is a true monster movie,” a spokesperson for DC Studios said. “It’s about a man who can become anyone, but can no longer remain himself. The horror is as much psychological as it is physical.”

CinemaCon Footage: ‘Unnerving and Violent’

The poster’s "melt" aesthetic aligns with descriptions of footage shown to industry insiders at CinemaCon last week. Reports from the event described "sickening" practical effects, including a scene where Hagen attempts to wipe away his own face in a bathtub, only for his features to slide off like wet paint.

Unlike previous iterations of the character, this version of Clayface is being played for pure horror. There is reportedly no mention of Batman in the script; instead, the film focuses entirely on Hagen’s descent into madness as he tries to maintain his Hollywood career while his body literally fails him.

The ‘Regenerative Medicine’ Viral Campaign

The poster release follows a sophisticated viral marketing campaign focused on the fictional "Gotham Medical" magazine. Earlier this week, images surfaced of Hagen gracing a "Most Gifted" celebrity cover, followed by a darker "Get Well Soon" headline from the Gotham Gazette after his disfigurement.

Naomi Ackie stars as the lead scientist behind the Renu You treatment, whose breakthrough in regenerative medicine becomes Hagen’s ultimate curse. Max Minghella and Eddie Marsan round out the cast in undisclosed roles, though insiders suggest Marsan may be playing a figure from Gotham’s criminal underworld.

The New DCU Strategy

Clayface represents a significant pillar of the James Gunn/Peter Safran "Elseworlds" and "Chapter One" strategy: creating lower-budget, director-driven films that push genre boundaries. With a reported production cost of just $40 million, the film is designed to be a profitable mid-budget horror entry that avoids the "superhero fatigue" of larger-scale blockbusters.

As the poster declares: “A face you won't forget.” For fans of the macabre, Clayface promises to be the most disturbing entry in the history of the DC Universe.

Clayface is set to melt into UK and US cinemas on 23rd October 2026.
