LOS ANGELES — Filmmaker Zack Snyder has offered a tantalising update on the long-discussed television prequel to his 2007 blockbuster 300, describing the project’s current standing as "awesome" and hinting at an expansive, epic vision for the franchise.
Speaking during an appearance on WMMR’s The Preston & Steve Show, the 60-year-old director stopped short of breaking non-disclosure agreements, but made it clear that the return to the brutal world of ancient Greece remains very much alive.
When pressed for specific production details on the television expansion, Snyder teased that the potential scope could dwarf what audiences saw in the original feature films.
"I can't really talk about it," Snyder admitted with a smile, before adding: "But it is awesome... The idea of a 'Game of Thrones-ian' version of 300 is particularly exciting to consider."
A Return to the Franchise’s Roots
Snyder’s original 300, adapted from Frank Miller’s iconic 1998 comic book series, was a watershed moment for modern action cinema. Made for an estimated $65 million (£50 million), the stylized, slow-motion-heavy recount of the Battle of Thermopylae went on to gross more than $456 million worldwide, establishing Gerard Butler’s King Leonidas as an indelible pop-culture figure.
While Warner Bros. Television first began quietly developing a prequel concept in 2024, recent industry movement suggests the project has gained significant momentum.
Streaming reports indicate that Netflix, where Snyder previously directed Army of the Dead and his two-part sci-fi epic Rebel Moon, has entered discussions to co-produce the series, with Snyder eyed to direct the pilot episode and executive produce alongside his partner Deborah Snyder.
Broadening the Spartan Canvas
While plot details remain strictly under wraps, Snyder’s comparison to HBO’s flagship fantasy drama hints at a story driven by complex political maneuvering, factional warfare, and sweeping worldbuilding, rather than focusing solely on a single isolated battlefield.
The prequel is expected to explore the geopolitical rivalries and ancient alliances across the Greek city-states prior to King Xerxes’ massive invasion.
Despite his enthusiasm for the Spartan epic, Snyder confirmed that his immediate directorial focus remains set on writing and directing a gritty, location-focused remake of John Carpenter's 1981 classic Escape from New York, which he is currently developing with Carpenter's explicit blessing.
