British woman killed in Naples cable car crash named

Margaret Elaine Winn, a British woman who was one of four people injured in a cable car accident near Naples, has been named by Italian authorities as Margaret Elayne Winn. Authorities have identified a second Briton injured in the crash, but no one has been identified as yet. Local authorities said one of the cables supporting it snapped on Thursday, dropping the mountain cable car cabin to the ground after one of its cables supporting the vehicle snapped. The cable car operator said it had passed a safety inspection just two weeks ago and that a criminal probe had been opened.

The UK foreign office said it was in touch with local authorities but that it had not revealed the identities of the victims. The two other victims include the operator of the cable car, who was identified by authorities as 59-year-old Carmine Parlato, and an Israeli woman named as Janan Suliman. Officials say a fifth individual in the cabin, Ms Suliman's brother, was critically injured in the crash and airlifted to the hospital, where he is in a critical state. The cause of the accident has been investigated by authorities in Torre Annunziata. At the time of the crash, sixteen people were rescued from a second cabin that was also on the line near the bottom of the valley. They were winched to safety. It was believed a traction cable had snapped, according to Castellammare di Stabia, where the cable car is located.

The emergency brake down worked fine, but not the one on the cabin that was supposed to reach the top of the hill,
he told Italian media on Thursday. He continued that there had been regular safety checks on the cable car line, which runs three kilometers from the town to the top of the peak of the mountain.
We are dealing with an incident in Italy and are in contact with the local authorities,
a spokesperson for the UK foreign office said. Our thoughts are with those affected.
Georgia Meloni, the Italian prime minister who was on a trip to Washington, expressed her
sincere condolences to the victims' families. Since 1952, the Mount Faito cable car has been operating. In 1960, a similar crash occurred on the line, killing four people.
