Israel Expands Gaza Offensive Amid Ceasefire Talks

Israel’s security cabinet has voted to escalate its military offensive in Gaza, aiming to seize the entire enclave and hold its territories indefinitely. The decision follows the collapse of a U.S.-backed ceasefire agreement, which had temporarily halted hostilities.

Under the new strategy, Israeli forces will expand ground operations gradually over several months, securing occupied areas rather than withdrawing after raids. Defence officials insist the move is necessary to defeat Hamas, though critics warn of further humanitarian fallout and a prolonged conflict.

The offensive includes a total blockade on aid, preventing humanitarian supplies from entering Gaza. The United Nations and international relief agencies have condemned Israel’s new aid distribution proposal, arguing it seeks to militarise assistance by forcing aid groups to operate under Israeli supervision.

Meanwhile, the Israeli military has issued tens of thousands of call-up orders for reserve forces, preparing for an extended campaign. The escalation comes ahead of U.S. President Donald Trump’s upcoming visit to the region, a trip that security experts say may offer a final opportunity for ceasefire negotiations.

Public opinion in Israel appears divided. While the government argues the offensive will weaken Hamas and enhance national security, critics fear Israel risks entrenching itself in a costly and indefinite conflict with no clear post-war plan for Gaza. Hamas continues to insist it will only release hostages if Israel agrees to withdraw completely, raising concerns about the fate of those still in captivity.
