Rockstar Games' preview special, Grand Theft Auto 6: An Extended Look, surged to the top of Netflix’s weekly English-language film charts, pulling in 31.1 million views in its first four days on the platform.
The 27-minute feature made its debut on Thursday, August 27th, giving it a shorter tracking window during Netflix's August 24th–30th weekly tracking period. Despite the delayed start, the special earned the number one movie spot in 87 of the 93 countries Netflix tracks, outpacing the thriller The Whisper Man, which took second place with 23.2 million views.
Rockstar partnered directly with Netflix for the debut before making the footage available on YouTube six hours later. The sudden influx of viewers looking for game footage created massive demand across Netflix's infrastructure:
- Mobile Activity: US mobile engagement jumped 35% hour-over-hour during the preview launch and climbed 50% compared to average usage over the preceding 12 weeks.
- Web Traffic Surge: Web visits to Netflix spiked by 125%, causing brief temporary outages on the service.
- YouTube Performance: Following its six-hour exclusive streaming window on Netflix, the video was uploaded to Rockstar's official YouTube channel, where it crossed 17 million views.
The two platforms calculate viewer engagement differently. Netflix measures views by dividing total watch hours by the total runtime, meaning "one household watching a 27-minute video twice looks the same in Netflix's math as two households each watching it once." On the other hand, YouTube logs a view as soon as playback starts, regardless of its duration or repeat views.
Take-Two Interactive CEO Strauss Zelnick described the Netflix release as "one of the hors d'oeuvres" in the marketing rollout leading up to the game's official release on November 19th for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S.
Captured on PS5 hardware, the footage gives fans their deepest look yet at leads Jason and Lucia navigating Vice City across cinematic sequences and active gameplay.
