Armed forces member who died in 'tragic accident' in Ukraine named

Armed forces member

Lance Corporal George Hooley of the Parachute Regiment has been named as the member of the UK Armed Forces who died in Ukraine.

The 28-year-old was killed in a “tragic accident” while observing Ukrainian forces testing “a new defensive capability away from the front lines,” the Ministry of Defence confirmed on Tuesday.

Paying tribute to the paratrooper in the House of Commons on Wednesday, Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer said his life was "full of promise and determination."

“He served our country with honour and distinction around the world in the cause of liberty and democracy, including as part of the small number of British forces in Ukraine.”

It is the first time a serving UK military death has been officially announced since the conflict began in February 2022. The UK government has never disclosed the exact number of service personnel in Ukraine but has previously stated that a small number are in the country to assist armed forces and provide security for diplomatic staff.
