Microsoft Overhauls Xbox PC App with Faster Loading Times and Redesigned Navigation

Microsoft has released a major update to its Xbox PC app for members of the Xbox Insiders program, introducing significant performance boosts alongside layout improvements designed to simplify game discovery.

According to internal benchmark testing conducted by Microsoft, the refreshed application launches up to 60 per cent faster than previous versions. Specific sections within the software including the Home tab, Store, and Game Pass pages load up to 50 per cent faster, while internal app windows open up to 65 per cent quicker. However, the company noted that actual performance improvements for individual players will vary depending on system configurations, local hardware, and network connection speeds.

Jason Beaumont, Vice President of Xbox Experiences, outlined the core goal of the update in an official company blog post:

“These updates are another step toward making Xbox easier to use, more responsive, and more familiar wherever you choose to play. We’ll continue listening to player feedback and improving over time.”

Beyond raw performance adjustments, the update introduces structural changes to how users navigate their gaming catalogs and connect with friends:

  • Unified Search: Search functionality now scans across the entire ecosystem at once, consolidating results for uninstalled games, local library titles, add-on content, and player profiles into a single query.
  • Integrated Social Features: Friends lists and social tools have been moved directly into the primary navigation bar, making it quicker to view active friends, initiate direct chats, or join multiplayer parties without opening secondary menus.
  • Refreshed Layout and Visual Modes: The app features updated game cards, reworked settings menus, and smoother animations. It also adds a dedicated toggle allowing players to switch between dark and light visual themes, while expanding available screen space for desktop monitors.
  • Consolidated Cloud Gaming: All cloud-supported games are now gathered into a single location. Microsoft confirmed that this refreshed layout will also extend to Xbox cloud gaming apps on supported smart TVs and VR headsets, alongside a broader automatic rollout of its web-based experience.

The overhaul arrives as Microsoft places increased strategic focus on its PC gaming segment, a sector that has shown steady growth even as traditional console hardware sales experience broader market headwinds.

The Xbox PC app continues to compete directly with established desktop storefronts like Valve's Steam and the Epic Games Store. While competitors like Epic have spent substantial capital to grow market share and tweak launcher performance, Valve's platform remains the dominant marketplace for PC gamers. With Steam also pushing performance patches to reduce client load times, industry observers note that Microsoft's focus on usability, particularly for Game Pass subscribers managing large libraries, remains central to its strategy.

The updated Xbox PC app is currently available to preview for members of the Xbox Insiders program via the Xbox Insider Hub, with a full public release expected to follow after initial testing.
