Australian Olympian Tom Craig Receives 12-Month Ban for Cocaine Incident at Paris 2024 Olympics
Australian Olympic hockey player Tom Craig has been handed a 12-month ban, with six months suspended, following his arrest in Paris for attempting to purchase cocaine during the 2024 Olympics.
Craig, 29, who has played over 100 games for Australia and won silver at the Tokyo 2021 Olympics, was detained by French police during a night out in Paris after Australia's hockey team was eliminated from the Games.
Although released without charge, Craig received a warning from a judge and was promptly removed from the Olympic athletes' village.
Hockey Australia (HA) confirmed the suspension after an investigation by its integrity unit. Craig’s ban began on September 9th and includes mandatory training and education programs.
The ban will see Craig miss out on major competitions over the next year, but he will be able to return to play if he meets all conduct and behavioural requirements during the second half of his suspension.
Hockey Australia say Craig’s welfare is their priority
Acknowledging his mistake, Craig publicly apologised to his family, teammates, and the Australian Olympic community.
"I made a terrible mistake," he admitted, expressing deep regret over his actions. Australia's chef de mission,
Anna Meares, offered some support, stating that Craig "is a good person who made a bad decision."
Despite the ban, Craig remains eligible for selection to the 2025 national men’s squad, which will be announced later this year. Hockey Australia emphasised that Craig has access to athlete support services and will continue to receive assistance throughout his suspension.
"His welfare remains our priority," HA noted in their statement.
